Toss Report

Pitch Report by Alan Wilkins and Dale Steyn

“This is pitch number 7. The curator reckons this is the same kind of pitch that he prepared for India-Pakistan. The moment you overpitch, you travel the distance. If you drag your length back (back of a length), it becomes increasingly difficult to score. The other thing is the mindset – captains like to come here, they like to chase. Whoever wins the toss will decide to chase.”

AUS vs SL LIVE: David Warner & Australia training on synthetic wickets to counter Sri Lanka’s Spin test: Follow Australia vs Sri Lanka LIVE Updates

T20 World Cup LIVE – Australia vs Sri Lanka LIVE: Australia opener David Warner revealed on Wednesday that he is practicing on synthetic wickets and polished concrete to sharpen his batting at the T20 World Cup & counter Sri Lankan spinners.

Warner scored 14 in the opening win over South Africa after managing scores of 1 and 0 in practice matches against India and New Zealand. Before linking up with Australia’s World Cup squad, he was dropped by Sunrisers Hyderabad after scoring a total of two runs in two consecutive matches in the UAE-leg of the IPL.

Warner said the tournament’s practice pitches had not done him any favours, “These practice wickets for example have been up and about for close to 12 weeks now,” he said. “At the moment I’m training on synthetic wickets, some polished concrete to get timing and rhythm and moving my feet, so that’s helping me. I think Finchie did the same thing the other day,” he added, referring to Australia captain Aaron Finch.

How will Australia counter Sri Lanka’s spin threat? Both Australia & Sri Lanka have won their opening matches & win in today’s match will boost their chances to qualify for the semifinals. But for Australia to do well their batsman will have to overcome the threat of Sri Lanka’s spinners.

Threat No.1 – Maheesh Theekshana – better knows as Mystery Spinner: Theekshana has been one of the breakout stars of the Twenty20 World Cup so far, taking eight wickets for just 45 runs in Sri Lanka’s first three games at an economy rate of five runs an over. He missed their last-up start against Bangladesh due to injury and was again rested from training ahead of the clash with Australia, but coach Mickey Arthur does expect him to play tonight.

The 21-year-old made his international debut just last month and has played only seven games for Sri Lanka, but his ability to spin the ball both ways has already earned him comparisons to legendary mystery spinner, Ajantha Mendis.

David Warner says, he will be watching Theekshana’s hands closely to counter him.

“I like the word mystery spinner … I’ve seen some of the footage,” Australian opener David Warner said.“You have to watch their hand closely and under lights that’s a difficult thing to do. You don’t get to see the seam. From a batter’s perspective, it’s about applying pressure like you normally do to any bowler. We know coming up against subcontinental teams they like to play two or three spinners against us, which we’re prepared for.”
