The first Bellator title defense and first rematch in the career of Vadim Nemkov is a successful one, as he successfully retained the Bellator light heavyweight championship in the main event of Bellator 257 against Phil Davis.
This was a rematch from their battle at Bellator 209, which saw Nemkov defeat Davis on a split decision.
Nemkov will now face the winner of Anthony “Rumble” Johnson vs. Yoel Romero in the semifinals of the Bellator Light Heavyweight Grand Prix.
Vadim Nemkov defeats Phil Davis to retain title, advance in tournament at Bellator 257
This fight started similar to the first fight, with Nemkov utilizing a leg-kick heavy attack and pushing the pace on the challenger.
Davis came out more aggressive in the second round, even opening up a cut around one of Nemkov’s eyes. Davis, however, slowed his output back down and Nemkov took back control, eventually dropping Davis with about two minutes to go in the second. Davis was able to grab a hold of Nemkov’s legs and clinch up with him against the cage, but it nearly resulted in Nemkov getting a guillotine on Davis.
Despite being a wrestling expert, Davis elected to continue to stand-and-trade with Nemkov, and the defending champ continued to get the better of him in the third round.
Nemkov fought on the back foot for the fourth round, with Davis applying some pressure, but not enough to trouble Nemkov at all over those five minutes.
Davis attempted to get Davis down late in the fifth round and look for a choke, but Nemkov reversed and tried for a submission of his own before Davis brought the fight back to the feet.
All three judges scored the fight for Nemkov, 48-47.
