Cortina Pou, Disette nominated for 2021 McWhorter award

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (April 19, 2021) – Sam Disette of the Alabama men’s swimming and diving team and Alba Cortina Pou of the Crimson Tide women’s tennis team have been nominated for the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship by the University of Alabama.

The H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship has been presented by the Southeastern Conference since 1986 to the league’s top male and female scholar-athletes.

The Southeastern Conference will name the 2021 recipients of the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship on May 18.

Highlights of Alabama’s nominees include:

SAM DISETTE, Alabama, Swimming & Diving Major: Finance

  • Two-year CSCAA Scholar All-American, 2019, 2020
  • Four-year member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll
  • President’s List (4.0 GPA) and Dean’s List (3.5 GPA) student throughout his UA career
  • 2021 NCAA Bronze Medalist
  • Three-year All-American, earning five first-team honors
  • Three-time Southeastern Conference Champion
  • SEC Championships Record Breaker
  • Three-year First Team All-SEC, 2019, 2020, 2021
  • Two-time University of Alabama record holder
  • Ranked seventh all-time at Alabama in the 50 freestyle

  • 2020 CoSIDA Academic All-American
  • 2020 CoSIDA Academic All-District IV
  • 2020 SEC Women’s Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year
  • Four-year ITA Scholar-Athlete
  • 2019 ITA Southern Region Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship Award winner
  • President’s List (4.0 GPA) every semester of her Alabama career
  • 2020 and 2021 SEC Women’s Tennis Community Service Team
  • Member of the Alabama Student-Athlete Advisory Committee
  • Four-year member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll
  • Two-time SEC Player of the Week

The SEC provides the league’s male and female McWhorter Scholar-Athlete of the Year Post-Graduate Scholarship recipients with a $20,000 post-graduate scholarship. The 26 remaining male and female finalists for the award will also receive a $10,000 post-graduate scholarship.

The award recipients are chosen by a committee of Faculty Athletics Representatives from the 14 SEC institutions and are announced in May.

Last year’s McWhorter Award recipients were LSU men’s basketball member Skylar Mays and Kentucky swimmer Asia Seidt.
