DC Playing XI vs CSK IPL 2021: Pant’s dilemma, Smith or Rahane at No 3

Delhi Capitals Playing XI vs CSK IPL 2021: Rishabh Pant’s dilemma, Steve Smith or Ajinkya Rahane at No 3?

Delhi Capitals Playing XI vs CSK – IPL 2021: Delhi Capitals (DC) captain Rishabh Pant’s first big test as a captain will be against the man, he replaced in Team India — MS Dhoni and his team Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Pant is leading DC in absence of regular skipper Shreyas Iyer. Against CSK, a winning start will give a depleted DC side the momentum. But before that, Pant has a selection headache – as he will have to choose between two of the stalwarts of international cricket. Should he start with Ajinkya Rahane or play new recruit Steve Smith for the crucial No 3 position – i.e the big question in front of Pant as he will select his playing XI.

DC Playing XI vs CSK – Ajinkya Rahane or Steve Smith? Both Ajinkya Rahane and Steve Smith are considered to be two of the best Test batsmen. But in T20 cricket, despite their batting prowess, both are yet to cement their positions. In Ajinkya Rahane, Rishabh Pant will have a tried and tested batsman who has grown up playing at the Wankhede Stadium but in Steve Smith, who can take on bowlers with ease on his day. Furthermore, coach Ricky Ponting has already hinted that if Smith gets his opportunity, he will bat at No 3 as Prithvi Shaw and Shikhar Dhawan will occupy the openers’ spots.

“If he gets an opportunity with us, I think it will be in the top three somewhere. If he gets an opportunity, I’m sure he’ll have a great year for us. It’s great to have him as a part of our squad. As I said — even if he doesn’t play, for instance, to have someone like that around with his sort of knowledge on the game and the T20 game, will be great for our group. I can’t wait to work with him again,” Ponting told

Ajinkya Rahane vs Steve Smith – who should Rishabh Pant pick in Playing XI for CSK vs DC?

Ajinkya Rahane: The owner of over 4,500 Test runs, Ajinkya Rahane has been a top or middle-order batsman for Team India. But in the IPL, Rahane has mostly played as an opener. In 112 innings, he has scored 3,462 runs at an average of 35.33, scoring two centuries and 34 fifties. At No 3, however, his record doesn’t give much confidence. He has only played 19 innings, scoring 316 runs with an average of 17.56.

Rahane vs Smith IPL statistics:

Ajinkya Rahane

Steve Smith

Steve Smith: The former Australian skipper is considered to be one of the best Test batsmen of the generation, perhaps even better than Virat Kohli. That he has scored over 7,000 Test runs with an average of 61.80 speaks volume about his batting skills. But in T20 cricket, that average goes down to 30.60. But he is a proven batsman for the No 3 position as he has played in the IPL at No 3 most of the times. In 39 innings, he has scored 1226 runs with a decent average of 38.31 and strike rate of 131.84.

Rahane vs Smith? Who should be DC’s No 3?

With two overseas pacers — Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje — leading DC’s pace attack, there is no secret that Smith will have limited opportunities in DC. But as both South African pacers will not be available for the first match against CSK, Rishabh Pant will have a great opportunity to try Smith out in place of Rahane. If he clicks, it will be to DC’s advantage as Rahane, being an Indian batsman in the squad, will have more opportunities.

Considering that Smith has a better average and strike-rate in the IPL and more experience of playing at No 3 position, Rishabh Pant could lean towards the Australian for the opening match. As for Smith, if he gets the opportunity, he will be hungry to prove his worth after being released by Rajasthan Royals ahead of the IPL 2021.

“I think the fact that he’s been released from the franchise that he’s been at for a long time will make him a bit hungry as well this year,” Ponting said.
