Dwyane Wade says Anthony Edwards ‘can be a better player than I was’

No. 1 overall pick Anthony Edwards received some high praise from Dwyane Wade.

The Minnesota Timberwolves remain at the bottom of the Western Conference standings and have the fewest wins in the league. However, that was to be expected after selecting No. 1 overall in the 2020 NBA Draft.

The rebuilding Timberwolves selected Anthony Edwards and he has proven to be a great choice. The teenager just scored 28 points against the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday and went 5-10 from deep. He showed off his game to a national audience and that included the watching eyes of Dwyane Wade.

The Miami Heat legend was serving as an analyst on TNT and offered up some serious praise to Edwards.

Wade sees a star in Edwards

Wade saying he thinks Edwards can be better than he was is a serious claim about the young man’s potential. The former NBA star also explained how he met Edwards years ago and saw just how smart the young man was when it came to breaking down the game of basketball.

Edwards is averaging right under 15 points per game so far in his rookie season and his 28 points against the Lakers marked a new career-best. There were questions about his love of the game coming out in the draft and he has quickly put that storyline to rest.

Wade, meanwhile, was a 13-time All-Star and won three NBA titles with the Heat. Saying Edwards can eclipse his own benchmarks means he sees a great deal of star power in the young man. That is good news for fans in Minnesota and for the league in general. It is always good when a No. 1 overall pick can live up to the expectations that come with that draft slot.

Fans just have to remember to keep the expectations in check for now. Edwards is still 19 years old and learning the NBA game at this point. It will take several more years before an early assessment of his career can take place. Based on what Wade said, we are seeing a star rise every single night.
