India vs England 2nd Test – Ravichandran Ashwin Most Unique Record: Cometh the hour, cometh the man! And that man for Team India is Ravichandran Ashwin, who not only bagged a five-wicket haul but also a scored a gritty half-century in the second innings to rescue Team India on Monday after the hosts lost five quick wickets in the first session on day 3 of the ongoing second Test between India and England at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
Ashwin came into bat when India were reeling at 106/6 with Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma, Cheteshwar Pujara, Rishabh Pant, Ajinkya Rahane and Axar Patel sent back to the pavilion. However, the 34-year-old spinner, who is playing at his home ground Chepauk, showed that he is not only good with the ball, but useful with the bat as well as he scored a solid fifty while stitching a crucial 96-run partnership with Indian skipper Virat Kohli, who himself hit a half-century before getting trapped in front of stumps by Moeen Ali.
Meanwhile, former India cricketer VVS Laxman termed the formidable stand between skipper Kohli and Ashwin a “match-winning partnership”.
Laxman said both Ashwin and Kohli showed that if a batsman applies himself he can score runs on what has been termed as a difficult wicket to bat on.
“Match winning partnership between Virat and Ashwin. Strong in defence, good footwork and capitalised on loose deliveries. Both of them showed that if you apply yourself you can definitely score runs on this pitch,” Laxman tweeted.
It is worth mentioning that earlier during England’s first innings, Ashwin bagged five wickets and now he has become the first and only Indian to pick five-wicket haul and hit fifty at home ground in the same Test.
Overall, the 34-year-old now has six five-wicket hauls and fifties in the same matches. He is ahead of Indian players Kapil Dev and Ravindra Jadeja with a half-century and five-for in the same Test.
