India Legends vs England Legends: ‘Pie-Chucker’ Yuvraj Singh is back to haunt Kevin Pietersen – Yuvraj Singh and Kevin Pietersen, two legends of cricket, have retired but the former England batsman’s Pie-Chucker jibe will renew when India Legends meet England Legends in the Road Safety World Series on Monday, March 9 in Raipur.
India Legends vs England Legends: While Yuvraj wasn’t a regular bowler, he did the job for India. But among his 148 wickets, Pietersen had fallen victims five times. However, it was during England’s tour of India in 2008 when the rivalry became intense as Yuvraj scalped him thrice during the series. After Yuvraj trapped Pietersen leg before in the first Test, the World Cup winner put his hands on his ear to make a bunny signal after spotting Pietersen on the giant screen.
Then in the second Test, then India skipper MS Dhoni brought in Yuvraj to unsettle Pietersen as India eyed victory. But the England batsman survived his spell and scored a match-saving 144. However, after the match, Pietersen, frustrated by soft dismissals by Yuvraj called the occasional left-arm spinner a “Pie-Chucker”.
“When the ball is swinging and seaming and you’ve got a guy like Zaheer Khan, who is one of the best bowlers I’ve ever faced, not bowling at you and you’ve got a pie-chucker like Yuvraj Singh bowling at you I really don’t mind. When you get left-arm filth like that it makes you feel really good,” Pietersen told the English press.
Yuvraj hit back, saying, “It shows KP hates getting out to me and if a useless bowler is getting him out five times then I would say that is quite useless batting.”
Since then, the two have occasionally used the term on social media platforms to refer each other. Recently, Pietersen shared a switch hit that he smashed a Scott Styris delivery, saying, “Just dealing with pies, @englandcricket. The original switch hits @kp24.”
Yuvraj commented on the Instagram post, saying, “Well sometimes u slip on those pies too.”
Indian Legends vs England Legends: However, the two have since buried the hatchet with Pietersen congratulating Yuvraj’s career. “Happy retirement, Pie Chucker. A quite remarkable career with plenty highs and some pretty brutal lows. You showed resilience, courage & pure brilliance throughout your time wearing blue! Love ya, @YUVSTRONG12!,” Pietersen had said.
On Monday, Pietersen’s England Legends will face India Legends at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium in a friendlier Road Safety World Series and will likely to face Yuvraj’s ball during the match. The former England batsman scored a 17-ball 42 against Bangladesh Legends in the first match while Yuvraj Singh bagged two wickets against the same opponents in the last match.
It remains to be seen if the “Pie-Chucker” is able to get him out again.
