WI vs SL Test: Kraigg Braithwaite replaces Jason Holder as Test skipper- Cricket West Indies has named Kraigg Braithwaite as the West Indies Test captain ahead of series against Sri Lanka scheduled to begin on March 21. He replaces Jason Holder as the Test skipper. Braithwaite becomes the 37th Test captain for West Indies. The 28-year-old has led West Indies in as many as 7 Tests. His recent success came against Bangladesh where West Indies won the Test series 2-0.
Speaking about his new role, Braithwaite said, “It is a huge honour to be given the Captaincy of the West Indies team. I feel extremely proud and humbled that the Board and Selectors have given me the opportunity and responsibility to lead the team.”
“The recent Test Series win in Bangladesh was a fantastic achievement and I’m really looking forward to the upcoming home series against Sri Lanka and I’m excited about what I believe this team can achieve in the future,” he added.
Roger Harper, CWI Lead Selector said,”We all believe that Kraigg is the right man to lead our Test side at this point in time and I’m delighted that he has accepted the role.”
The decision comes even as Jason Holder holds the No.1 allrounder spot in ICC Test Rankings. He led West Indies in 37 Tests after taking over from Dinesh Ramdin in 2015. He has helped WI win 11 matches, 5 draw and 21 losses.
The squad for the 1st Test against Sri Lanka will be announced on tomorrow (Friday March 12th) during the interval of the 2nd CGI Insurance ODI at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium (SVRS).
