UConn hires Jim Mora as next head coach

The University of Connecticut football team hasn’t posted a winning season since 2010, so now, they’re looking to a guy with plenty of winning experience at the NFL and collegiate level to try and change the culture.

UConn made the news official that Jim Mora will be the program’s next head coach via an announcement on Twitter.

Mora and the university agreed to a five-year contract that will pay him $1.5 million in the first year, per The Athletic. Mora can also earn an additional $200,000 annually in performance incentives.

The 59-year-old Mora began his coaching career in 1984 as a graduate assistant at the University of Washington before starting a seven-year stint with the then-San Diego Chargers. Mora had three different titles during his run with the Chargers, all focused on the defensive side of the ball, before he joined the New Orleans Saints as their secondary coach from 1992 through 1996.

Mora spent the 1997 and 1998 campaigns as the secondary coach with the San Franciso 49ers before serving as their defensive coordinator from 1999 through 2003. Mora’s first NFL head-coaching gig was with the Atlanta Falcons from 2004 through 2006, then he spent the next two seasons as the assistant head coach/secondary coach with the Seattle Seahawks and the 2009 season as the team’s head coach.

Mora’s most recent football coaching job was as the lead man at UCLA, where he coached from 2012 through 2017. He has a 31-33 career record as a head coach in the NFL, while holding a 46-30 mark in the college game.

The Los Angeles native will be just the seventh coach in UConn football history. The Huskies have struggled to the tune of a 10-47 record since 2016.
