UFC Vegas 19: Pros react to Derrick Lewis brutally knocking out Curtis Blaydes

Derrick Lewis absolutely annihilated Curtis Blaydes, and fellow MMA fighters lost their minds.

You can never count out Derrick Lewis to put on a show and deliver a big knockout, and he displayed that with his second-round finish of Curtis Blaydes in the pivotal heavyweight contender main event of UFC Vegas 19.

Blaydes dropped his UFC debut to Francis Ngannou but went unbeaten in six straight fights afterward, including wins over Aleksei Oleinik, Mark Hunt and Alistair Overeem. Since losing a rematch to Ngannou, Blaydes had won four straight, defeating Justin Willis by decision, Shamil Abdurakhimov and Junior dos Santos by second-round TKO and Alexander Volkov by decision.

Lewis had won nine of 10 before dropping back-to-back fights to Daniel Cormier and dos Santos, the former coming in a heavyweight title fight at UFC 230. Lewis entered tonight with three straight wins, scoring decisions over Blagoy Ivanov and Ilir Latifi, as well as a second-round finish of Oleinik.

Blaydes and Lewis, who entered this bout ranked at No. 2 and 4 respectively, were originally scheduled to meet in November before Blaydes tested positive for COVID-19.

Lewis briefly stunned Blaydes with a hook as Blaydes tried to enter inside for a takedown early on, leading to a first round that was filled with plenty of standing around with occasional exchanges. Blaydes seemed to get the better of those, however, including a body shot and follow-up flurry that seemed to hurt Lewis.

Lewis only needed one punch to get the job done in the second round, catching Blaydes with a deadly uppercut as he was coming in for a brutal knockout.
